It’s finally Friday! And having Friday’s off from school means that my weekend starts early, and I could not be happier. Juggling eight courses at school makes for a very busy and stressful week, so I plan to take full advantage of the weekend and treat myself with a little relaxation.
Another thing I decided to treat myself with … my favourite smoothie ever for lunch. I lived on residence for my first year when I went to the University of Guelph, and took full advantage of all the great food options that were on campus. One of my favourite things to buy was a peanut butter and banana protein smoothie from the cafe right by my residence building – my roommate and I were absolutely obsessed with them.
If you read my last blog post then you would know that I decided to attempt to get back to eating well and living healthy after a busy Christmas season. Yes, I realize it is the end of January and I was a little late on the whole New Years resolution thing … but better late than never, right? So, in keeping with my news year resolution I told myself that I am going to make a point to be more active this year. Being enrolled in eight courses this semester makes it tough to find time to exercise, but I am going to do my best.
I live in the region of Halton and I am lucky enough that there are so many amazing hiking trails within it. I’ve lived here for two years and I’m a little ashamed to say that I haven’t made it to all of the trails yet, so I told myself that every weekend that I stay in Milton that I’ll make a point to get out and go on a hike (even if it is stupidly cold). My plan this past Sunday was to go hiking at Hilton Falls with my boyfriend, buuuut that didn’t end up happening. Like I said, I’m trying my best to eat well all the time but I’ve been allowing myself to indulge once per week. This Sunday my indulgence was all you can eat sushi, so it’s safe to say that we were not up for a two hour hike afterwards. Not wanting to feel like bums all day though, we still wanted to get out and do something so we decided to go to Milton’s Mill Pond. I had never been, but my mom had been going a lot in the fall so we thought it was worth checking out.
Well, it’s been a while since my last post … but I’m ready and excited to get back into it! After an amazing Christmas season filled with a lot of family time and a ton of delicious (and probably less than healthy) food, I told myself that in the new year I was going to get back on track and try to get healthy. Well it’s January 25th I can definitely say that has not happened as of yet, especially seeing as I went for all you can eat sushi and had pizza twice last weekend … oops. But who says the only time you can make a change is at the start of the year? So this morning I told myself that I am going to do my best to stick to eating healthy food, while still allowing myself to have a treat every now again … just not to the same extent as last weekend.
Last weekend, I went to the Christmas Market in Toronto’s Distillery District and I’ve been in the Christmas spirit ever since. This was only the second time I had been to the Toronto Christmas Market and unfortunately the weather was less than ideal and my feet ended up soaked the entire time. (Note to self: Stop buying cheap boots). But aside from that, I still had a great time taking in all the Christmas decorations and trying to find unique gifts for my family and friends. Piece of advice – if you’ve never been and are planning on going, make sure you go in the evening. Although it’s busier at night, it’s absolutely worth it because it looks ever prettier when it’s all lit up. The rain prevented me from getting any photos this year (I’m extremely cautious with my technology now … I’ve broken one too many phones over the years), but here’s a video that shows just how pretty the lights are.
Because of how much I enjoyed the Christmas Market downtown, you could say I got a little excited when I found out there was going to be one in Streetsville for the first time this year. I grew up in Mississauga, and Streetsville is one of my favourite neighbourhoods within it so my friends and I decided to check out the Market last night. It was held in Streetsvilles’ main square which was renovated just last year and was open from 2:00 pm to 9:00 pm, but we decided to go around 6:00 pm because food, drinks and entertainment didn’t start until 5:00 pm.
A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about how I got to make my Oma’s apple cake on my own for the first time. Ever since then, I’ve had the urge to learn some of the other recipes that my family has come up with over the years. So, after talking with my mom, she agreed to show me how to make some of her favourites. I asked her to start with something easy so there would be a very minimal chance of me messing it up, and so we decided to start with her homemade chicken burgers. Growing up I was a very picky eater, but I like to think that I’ve gotten a lot better as I’ve gotten older. That being said, I’m still not the biggest fan of red meat and I have never been the person who would crave a hamburger. Chicken burgers are a totally different story though, and from the first time my mom made me on I crave them all the time. I also justify eating them a lot because they’re chicken and therefore they are leaner than an actual burger and therefore they are healthy, right? Right.
So, for anyone out there who isn’t the biggest fan of beef, or who is looking for a leaner option for a burger, please try this recipe! I guarantee you’ll love it.

If there’s one thing that I enjoy more than hiking and the outdoors, it’s food. I absolutely love to eat, but what I love even more is actually baking and cooking. I bake a fair amount throughout the year, but I find that as the weather gets colder I tend to bake more and more. Although I consider myself to be a pretty good baker, I can’t even compare myself to my Oma. Aside from being the sweetest woman in the world, my Oma is also an amazing baker. She has a number of dishes that she brings every time our family gets together, one of which is her apple cake. As she gets older, its becoming harder and harder for her to stand for long periods of time to bake, so she has finally passed on the recipe to my mom and I. Last night was the first time I had baked the cake on my own, and I was very satisfied with the outcome!

With the weather quickly getting cold, I find myself thinking more and more about those warm summer days. Don’t get me wrong – I love fall, but there’s something about having to break out a jacket that makes me miss those summer adventures. When I think about my favourite parts of this past summer, there’s one weekend in particular that sticks out to me. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to tag along with my boyfriend and his family one weekend when they rented out a cottage in Wiarton, Ontario. I absolutely love hiking, so we made sure we made the most of the weekend and went on as many as possible. On the drive up on Saturday, we stopped at Inglis Falls to hike and see the waterfall. Me being the klutz that I am, fell in the water as we were hiking up the waterfall, but the view was definitely worth having wet running shoes for the rest of the day.
